Water

Water is the most critical commodity known to mankind, though you wouldn't know it by how we abuse this vital resource. From dumping chemicals into lakes and rivers to contaminating groundwater through carelessness, we take it for granted that it will always be there when we turn on the tap.

Canadians waste water at a ridiculous rate compared to the rest of the world. At 343L per person, per day, that is more than twice the amount of water used by the average European. 1999 Environment Canada stats break down Canadian personal water use in the following manner:

  • 35% bathing,
  • 25% laundry and cleaning,
  • 30% toilet flushing, and
  • 10% cooking and drinking.

Environment Canada water tips:

  • Turn taps off tightly.
  • Repair leaks immediately.
  • Buy water-efficient fixtures, and install low-flow attachments on faucets.
  • Do not bathe in freshwater systems
  • Use environmentally safe cleaning products displaying the EcoLogo symbol.
  • Buying a biological toilet instead of a septic tank system.
  • Ensure that leaking or failing septic systems are serviced immediately.
  • Avoid overloading the septic system by washing laundry in small batches.
  • Know the location of all the components of the septic system, and ensure that heavy vehicles are kept away.
  • Never plant shrubs or trees near the septic system.
  • Check your septic system annually, have a reputable contractor remove sludge and scum every three to five years, and document all service and pump-outs.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, cottagers must adapt to certain realities of water usage in rural areas. Few cottages are connected to a municipal system, and thus must rely on ground water from wells or purified lakes and rivers.

Recent events illustrate what happens when you ignore the importance of clean, safe water.

Used water ends up back in circulation far quicker than most people realize. You will want to have your water source tested for purity on a regular basis, as well as implementing a conservation plan. This section of the site should help give you ideas for how to go about keeping your water safe for friends and family.
